The reason we want people to [spray live bacteria on their faces] is because we believe that it is fundamental to their skin looking and feeling really great. [We believe that] having certain types of bacteria on your skin purposefully is mission critical for you to have healthy-looking skin.

Our guest this week is Jasmina Aganovic, president of the Boston-based wellness company Mother Dirt. Mother Dirt’s cornerstone product is the AO+ Mist, a probiotic spray for your face and body that contains live strains of Mother Dirt’s patented “peacekeeper bacteria.” That’s right – Mother Dirt wants you to spray live strains of bacteria onto your face. We were skeptical, too – haven’t we spent our whole lives using products designed to eliminate the bacteria on our skin? As Jasmina explains in this interview, however, the bacteria in Mother Dirt’s mist once lived on human skin, but was eradicated over the last century because of our modern hygiene practices. By reintroducing this bacteria to your skin, Mother Dirt’s AO+ Mist can balance your skin’s microbiome, restore your skin’s balance and clarity, and (major bonus!) greatly simplify your skincare routine. We like to think of Mother Dirt’s products as the skincare equivalent of the probiotic supplements we take to promote a healthy gut.

In this episode, Jasmina talks about why using Mother Dirt’s probiotic skincare can normalize your skin and can help eliminate the need for complicated skincare routines. Jasmina also talked about how the bacteria in Mother Dirt’s AO+ Mist can be used on your underarms to restore balance and help mitigate odor-causing bacteria so you can wean yourself off deodorant. We also talked about the other “biome-friendly” products in Mother Dirt’s line, including their Cleanser (which also happens to be host Jesse’s holy grail cleanser), Moisturizer, and Shampoo. Jasmina also told us about her favorite non-Mother Dirt products, like the pen eyeliner that doesn’t dry out and the lip balm that is worth its $26 price tag.
