I started working with [my mother] when I was in high school. My first CMA Awards, we told them I was 18 and I was really 17-and-a-half, but you had to be 18 to work and get paid... I learned from my mom, but I lived it... She used to do a show, it was a Johnny Cash Show summer replacement series for CBS, and I would be at the side of the stage and would see people like Kenny Rogers, Linda Ronstadt and Joni Mitchell, and I was sitting on the side of the stage doing my homework or whatever.

Our guest this week is Val Cole, long-time makeup artist and owner of Daniel Cole Collection, a skincare and makeup line she founded in 1998 with her late mother Joyce Daniel Hill.

Val learned her way around a makeup kit by observing her mother, a freelance makeup artist with an outstanding client list including countless celebrities, notable politicians and Martha Graham and George Ballanchine from the New York City and San Francisco Ballets. Joyce also served as the head makeup artist for the Country Music Awards from 1975 to 2000, until she devoted herself full-time to the Daniel Cole Collection. After earning her BA from Hollins College, Val joined her mother at TNN and CMA in 1986 and worked for over 25 years as a makeup artist on television shows, photo shoots videos, album covers and more. Today, Val runs Daniel Cole Collection, a skincare and makeup line she founded with her mother that has a storefront in the Green Hills neighborhood of Nashville.

In this episode, Val tells us what it was like learning from and working with her mother, why and how they decided to launch their own makeup and skincare line, and why she loves creating custom-blended lipsticks for her clients. She also shares how she battles her rosacea and all of the skincare and color products she always has in her kit.
