Our guest this week is Woo Caroland, owner of Woo Skincare + Cosmetics in Nashville, Atlanta and Charlotte.

Woo is a true pioneer of the beauty industry in Nashville, having opened one of the very first cosmetic and skincare boutiques in the early 90s that is still in operation today.

A native Texan, Woo came to Nashville by way of New York City armed with an impressive background in the art world (having worked at Sotheby’s and in the art department of Vanity Fair) and a passion for retail cultivated at stores like Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman. Woo set her sights on creating a similar retail experience in Nashville and opened a cosmetics counter inside the famed luxury boutique Harry B’s and later her own namesake boutique in 1992, Woo Skincare + Cosmetics. Her talent for recognizing emerging trends in beauty and her eye for artful merchandising made Woo Skincare + Cosmetics a success, garnering attention from Vogue, Town & Country, Lucky Magazine and more. Today, Woo has four locations in Nashville, Atlanta and Charlotte and is still known for her incredible customer service.

In this episode, Woo shares how she got her business off the ground and how it continues to be a success over 25 years later. Woo discussed her love for stores like Neiman’s, Barney’s and Bergdorf’s, and revealed that the famed Betty Halbreich, a personal shopper at Bergdorf Goodman, has helped dress her for years. (If you haven’t seen Betty in "Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf's,” you must watch it immediately. See trailer below.) Woo shares how she convinced Chanel and Bobbi Brown to allow her to carry their lines in Nashville – a huge service to the women in Nashville back when the city was a far cry from a shopping destination and before the days of online shopping. (She always takes “no” to mean “not yet.”) She also discusses the other brands she loves and carries in her stores (like the sleeper brand Chantecaille) and the importance of beautiful packaging.
